Landscaping Built for the Chihuahuan Desert — Not a National Playbook
Landscaping Las Cruces designs and installs xeriscapes, hardscape and irrigation systems for homes and commercial properties across Las Cruces and Doña Ana County. We work with the conditions this valley actually has: caliche soil, roughly ten inches of rain a year, monsoon runoff, and 300 days of direct sun.
Landscaping Las Cruces is a Las Cruces, NM landscaping company specializing in xeriscaping, rock landscaping, hardscaping and drip irrigation. We design around local conditions — caliche soil, alkaline pH, monsoon drainage and the City of Las Cruces watering schedule — rather than applying plant lists and installation methods built for wetter climates.
Las Cruces sits in the Chihuahuan Desert with the Rio Grande running through the valley. These are the baseline conditions every plant, paver and irrigation line on your property has to survive.
Why We Build Differently in Las Cruces
Most landscaping failures in this valley are not plant failures. They are design failures — the wrong material, the wrong irrigation sequence, or base preparation that ignored what is under the topsoil.
The Problem We Kept Seeing
Bermuda lawns installed on lots that cannot support them without constant irrigation. Patios poured over caliche without proper base depth, heaving within two seasons. Gravel spread edge to edge and called xeriscaping. Sprinkler heads spraying open ground at noon in July, half the water gone before it reaches a root.
None of these are exotic mistakes. They happen because the work was specified from a generic playbook instead of from the property.
How We Work Instead
Every project starts with a walkthrough of your actual lot — sun exposure, drainage paths, soil and caliche depth, access, and how you intend to use the space. Material and plant selection comes after that assessment, not before it.
Irrigation is designed and sleeved before hardscape goes down, so you are not cutting into finished stonework later. Written, itemized estimates go out before anything is scheduled.
Our standard: landscaping that looks right the day it is finished and still performs after a decade of Las Cruces sun, monsoon runoff and winter freeze cycles. Base course, edge restraints, jointing and irrigation zoning done to spec — not rushed to hit a schedule.
What Makes This Market Different
Six conditions shape nearly every landscaping decision in Las Cruces. A company that has not accounted for all six is guessing.
Caliche Soil
A hardened calcium-carbonate layer sits near the surface across much of the valley, and its depth varies property to property. It blocks drainage and root development, and it dictates excavation depth for both planting beds and hardscape base.
Water Scarcity
Around ten inches of rain a year, and a City of Las Cruces watering schedule that restricts outdoor irrigation by address and by hour from April through September. Irrigation efficiency is not optional here — it is the whole design constraint.
Monsoon Runoff
Much of the city sits within the geologic floodplain. Summer monsoon storms drop concentrated rainfall onto compacted, low-absorption ground and expose every drainage flaw a yard has. Grading and runoff routing matter more than in most markets.
Heat & Sun Load
More than 300 sunny days a year and routine summer highs above 100°F. Surface temperature, material selection and shade placement change what is actually usable outdoors — and what will fade, crack or burn out within a few seasons.
HOA Material Palettes
Communities like Sonoma Ranch run guided material palettes. We design around those requirements from the start rather than after a rejected submission.
New-Construction Lots
An active real estate market means a steady supply of bare, graded lots with compacted soil, no irrigation and no established plantings — a blank slate that needs infrastructure sequencing, not just plants.

What Backs Our Work
No vague promises. Here is exactly what you get in writing before a crew arrives.
Written, Itemized Estimates
Materials, labor and timeline broken out in writing before anything is scheduled. Estimates are free and based on an on-site walkthrough, not a phone guess.
Workmanship Warranty
Warranty terms are spelled out up front and provided in writing at project close — covering installation work, not just materials.
Site Assessment First
Soil, caliche depth, drainage paths, sun exposure and access are evaluated before any plan is finalized. No plant list or material spec goes out before we have seen the property.
Permits Handled
Where a permit is required — larger retaining walls, or work that changes drainage on your lot — we confirm requirements with the City of Las Cruces or Doña Ana County and handle the submission.
Straight Answers
Clear guidance on materials, scope, timeline and cost before work begins. No upsells you did not ask for, and no disappearing after the deposit clears.
Our Process, Start to Finish
Every project follows the same sequence, regardless of size. The order matters — especially irrigation before hardscape.
Free On-Site Consultation
We visit the property, discuss how you want to use the space, and identify the major opportunities and constraints before talking materials.
Site & Soil Assessment
Soil texture, compaction, alkalinity, caliche depth, drainage paths, sun exposure and microclimates across the lot — the inputs that drive every later decision.
Design & Written Estimate
A plant and material plan built around your property, budget and maintenance preference, with an itemized quote covering materials, labor and timeline.
Site Preparation
Turf and unsuitable material removal, excavation, grading and base compaction — sized to the soil conditions we actually found, not a default depth.
Irrigation First, Then Hardscape
Drip lines, sprinkler heads and sleeving go in before base material is compacted and stone is set. Getting this sequence backwards is the most common reason homeowners retrofit later.
Planting, Finishing & Walkthrough
Plants installed, rock and DG placed, controller programmed to the city schedule, then a walkthrough covering establishment watering and seasonal care before we call it done.
Las Cruces & Doña Ana County
Conditions shift noticeably across the valley. East Mesa lots do not behave like older lots near downtown, and neither behaves like an HOA lot in Sonoma Ranch.
Neighborhoods & Communities
What Changes Where
- Sonoma Ranch — HOA-guided material palettes; we design to those requirements from the start.
- East Mesa — largely new construction on bare, compacted lots needing full infrastructure.
- Mesilla Acres — larger lots near the pecan groves, often replacing established lawns.
- Downtown & Historic District — smaller lots, mature trees and existing hardscape to work around.
Common Questions
What areas do you serve?
Every neighborhood in Las Cruces, including Sonoma Ranch, the East Mesa, Mesilla Acres, Telshor and the neighborhoods around NMSU. Call to confirm availability for your address.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are free and provided in writing after an on-site walkthrough. We do not quote landscaping projects over the phone, because soil, drainage and access vary too much lot to lot for a phone number to mean anything.
Do you handle both residential and commercial work?
Yes. We work on single-family residential properties, new-construction lots, HOA-governed communities and commercial properties across Las Cruces.
Do you only do xeriscaping, or traditional landscaping too?
Both. Xeriscaping, rock landscaping and drip irrigation are our core focus because they fit this climate best, but we also install sod, artificial turf and full hardscape. We will tell you honestly what a turf area will cost you in water before you commit to it.
How long does a typical project take?
A small front-yard conversion or walkway can take a few days. A full front-and-back transformation involving turf removal, drainage work, irrigation and custom hardscape can run several weeks. You get a realistic timeline in writing before work starts.
When is the best time of year to start a project?
Fall and spring are generally the most favorable planting windows because temperatures are moderate and establishment is easier. Hardscape and irrigation work can proceed year-round. Planning during winter often means your install lands in the ideal planting window.
Do you handle permits?
Where one is required — typically larger retaining walls or work that alters drainage on your lot — we confirm requirements with the City of Las Cruces or Doña Ana County and handle the submission as part of the project.
